Ruth Garland Barton, 83, of Cumming passed away on Nov. 16, 2009. Born on Garland Mountain in Cherokee County, she was the daughter of the late General Briggs and Beulah Mae Garland. A longtime member of Oak Hill Baptist Church in Lawrenceville, Mrs. Barton was a creative seamstress, ceramicist, gospel songwriter and poet.
She is survived by her beloved husband, James E. Barton of Cumming; sons, Jimmy (Margo) Barton of Cumming, Ferrell (Susie) Barton of Lawrenceville; daughter, Tina Porter of Cumming; sister, Bernise Garland of Dallas; brothers, Dennis (Evelyn) Garland of Rydal, Tom H. Garland of Adairsville, Howard (Betty) Garland of Rydal; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 19, at Barton Funeral Home in Adairsville with the Rev. Hugh Johnson officiating. Interment will follow at Eastview Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. and from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 18, at McDonald and Son Funeral Home in Cumming and from 1-3 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 19, at Barton Funeral Home.
