Stephanie Lemke Dirst, age 74, of Cumming known to her friends as "Stevie", died on November 9, 2016 at Northside Hospital-Forsyth. Born in Springfield, Ill. she was the daughter of the late William and Mildred Lemke.
Stephanie spent her career working with special needs students, much of the time teaching at the American School for the Deaf, North Georgia College, Kennesaw State as well as running state programs for babies and children with disabilities. She held many state offices in the Council for Exceptional Children and their Pioneers.
Stevie loved traveling and was a loving mother, grandmother and friend. She was a devoted participant at Christ the King Episcopal Church in Lilburn. She often attended basketball games at Forsyth Central High School, to support the teams coached by her son, Greg.
She is survived by her sons, Greg (Dawn) Dirst of Cumming, and Doug (Holly) Dirst of Sylvania; sister, Eileen (Pat) Hamblin of Hayward, Wis.; much-loved granddaughters, Madison, Ansley, and Sydney Dirst (with whom she had Dirst Camp every summer for 12 years); and loving friend, Robert (Rocky) Hoyt.
Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 13, at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Spirit in Cumming. A reception will follow the service. The family will receive friends on Friday, Nov. 11, from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home.
