W. Robert Worley, 75, of Cumming died Thursday, July 17, 2008, after a long illness. Born and raised in Rome, he was the son of the late Herbert and LaRue Worley. Mr. Worley was a graduate of Darlington School and served in the U.S. Marine Corps.
A longtime resident of Atlanta, he was a graduate of Emory University and later received a law degree from the Atlanta Law School. He was a member of Kappa Alpha Fraternity and President of Alpha Kappa Psi business fraternity.
Mr. Worley began his career in hospital administration at Emory University Hospital. He then served as personnel manager and subsequently, Director of Public Affairs for the Georgia Power Company. In 1981 he became Director of Governmental Affairs for the Southern Company and opened their Washington, DC office. During his tenure in Washington, Mr. Worley received numerous awards and recognition for his work on behalf of the Southern Company and the electric utility industry.
In 1987, Mr. Worley and his family retired to St. Simons Island, where he was an active member of the Wesley United Methodist Church. In 1995, the family moved to Cumming.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Pat Worley of Cumming; daughters, Larissa Kelly Worley of Austin, Texas, and Allison Genevieve Worley of Alpharetta; son, W. Robert (Julie) Worley Jr. of Rockmart; grandchildren, Laura Caroline Worley and Wesley Robert Worley III of Rockmart; sister, JoAnn Worley (Thomas) Fitts of Carrollton; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 22, in the chapel of McDonald and Son Funeral Home. Interment will follow at 3 p.m. at Oak Knoll Memorial Gardens in Rome. The family will receive visitors on Monday, July 21, from 5-9 p.m. at the funeral home.
