Mr. Walter (Walt) Herbert Fairchild, 66, of Dawsonville, formerly of Cumming, Alpharetta and College Park, passed away Sunday, March 23, 2014, with loved ones by his side. He was Deputy Director of the Georgia State Financing and Investment Commission where he worked for 35 years prior to becoming Construction Coordinator for the Forsyth County School System. Mr. Fairchild was a member of Creekside Church in Cumming.
He officiated high school football for 25 years, including three state championship games, for the Georgia Football Officials Association. He was an active member of the Cumming Group for more than 20 years.
He is survived by his three much-loved children, daughter, Tara and son-in-law Brian Cuda and their son Kevin and daughter Marinn, daughter Mandy and son-in-law Don Paige and their daughter Brecken, and his son, Brant and daughter-in-law Jackie Fairchild and their son Theodore. He is also survived by his dear sister, Karen and brother-in-law Steve House of Griffin and their children; dear sister, Kathy Warden of Brooks and her children; and his beloved girlfriend, Lulu Busby of Acworth.
Mr. Fairchild spoke often of his many life's blessings. His large family and many friends were his most cherished blessings. "My life has always been so full and wonderful. I look forward to the rest of the journey."
The funeral will be held Saturday, March 29, at 3 p.m. at McDonald and Son Funeral Home in Cumming. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday, March 28, from 4-8 p.m. The body will be cremated with the ashes scattered over Lake Lanier and the Gulf of Mexico.
Walt found no greater pleasure than being out on the water, especially his beloved Lake Lanier. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations be made to The Corps Foundation: official nonprofit of America's Lakes and Waterways that cares for Lake Lanier: www.corpsfoundation.org/join_donate.
