Anna Marie ""Grammie'" (Maul) Sternenberger Obituary
Marie, affectionately known as Grammie to everyone who knew her, passed away Sunday, September 29, 2013, at her home in New Raymer, after a short battle with cancer. She was born January 12, 1918 in Flint Michigan to Amelia Achziger and Jacob Maul. That spring the family moved to Loveland, Colorado, to work in the beet fields. At age 16, she moved to Denver to work as a nanny. In 1937, she married Ruben Bauer in Loveland and in 1942 they moved to Greeley where she worked for Stoll's Market and Safeway until her retirement in 1992. Ruben and Marie divorced in 1967 and she moved back to Denver where she met and married Walter Sternenberger in 1970. After retirement, Grammie spent time attending ball games to watch her great-grandchildren, working in her garden and rose garden and playing bridge. Her true love was bridge, and being a passionate competitor, she played bridge nearly four times a week. In 2003, the Sternenberger's moved to Windsor to be closer to family. When it was time for assisted living, they moved to New Raymer to live with Granddaughter Susie.
Grammie is survived by her husband, Walter; daughters, Marcia Elwood and Margaret (Roy) Hutchinson; grandchildren, Susie Kester, Jubal (Kathy) Kester, Anita Hyatt, all of New Raymer, Bill Elwood, Platteville, Susan Nicely, Tampa, Florida, and Kelly (Shawna) Elwood, Haxtun; eight great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Emma Lesser, Longmont, Betty Brogdon, North Platte, Nebraska, and Marie Erhlick, Greeley; several nieces and nephews and eight stepchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, and siblings, Katherine, Esther, Amelia, Bill, Pete and Robert.
Services will Saturday, October 5th, at 12:00 p.m. in Stoneham at the Chapel of the Plains Church. Burial will be at the family cemetery at Tincup. The Heer Mortuaries & Crematory are entrusted with the cremation arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice of the Plains, in memory of Marie Sternenberger, 100 Broadway, Suite 1-A, Sterling, Colorado 80751.
