DEREK W. SMITH, 68, passed away on Monday, Nov. 5, 2012, at Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne. Born Nov. 8, 1943, in Defiance, Ohio, he was the son of Clarence and Belva (Hage man) Smith. He was a 1961 graduate of Fairview High School and attended Defiance College for two years. On April 2, 1966, he was united in marriage with Diane Doeden. He served in the U.S. National Guard. He was owner of Hi-Lanes Bowling Alley, Hicksville for 15 years. He was also a professional bowler for 10 years, a race car driver, restored classic cars, and currently owned Derek Smith Engines. He was a member of Central Church, Fort Wayne. He was previously a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Hicksville where he was a Sunday school teacher and sang in the choir. He was also a member of the Hicksville Rotary Club, Professional Bowlers Tour and National Dragster Organization. He loved his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Diane; daughter, Cynthia (Mark) Sordelet of Fort Wayne; son, Brett Smith of Florida; grandchildren, Jake and Summer Sordelet and Noah and Allison Smith; two sisters, Leazon Repar of Toledo, Ohio and Marjorie Myers of Hicksville, Ohio; and three brothers, Greg of Fort Wayne, Brad and Rex, both of Defiance, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his parents. Memorial service is 7 p.m. Thursday in the Family Life Center at Central Church, Fort Wayne, with visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. Memorials may be made to Central Church Missions or World Vision.
