FREDERICK W. "FRITZ" BERNING, 90, of Hoagland, died on Monday, Nov. 26, 2012, 10:25 p.m., at New Haven Care & Rehabilitation Center. Born Feb. 21, 1922, in Allen County, he was a son of the late Fred C. Berning and Marie M. (Grote) Berning. He married Florence M. Siebert on Sept. 16, 1951. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Bingen; the Men's Club of the church; and Allen County Farm Bureau. He served his country in the United States Army during World War II. He was a lifelong dairy and grain farmer in southern Allen County. Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Florence M. Berning of Hoagland, Ind.; daughter, Elaine (Jim) McDonald of Tempe, Ariz.; sons, Norman (Cynthia) Berning of Hoagland, Dean Berning of Decatur, Ind. and Roger Berning of Hoagland; sister, Leila Judt of Fort Wayne; 15 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild. He was also peceded in death by a sister, Ottilia Kiefer; and a brother, Arthur Berning. Service is 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2, 2012, at St. John Lutheran Church, Bingen, with calling one hour prior. Pastor Peter Brock officiating. Calling also from 2 to 5 and 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home, Decatur. Burial in St. John Lutheran Cemetery, Bingen.
