GORDON E. FOUTS, 81, died peacefully on Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2013, in the evening. "He didn't want to wait until Christmas and cause any fuss. He was taken care of beautifully by his family and the lovely staff at Visiting Nurse & Hospice Home who have our wholehearted gratitude." Gordon grew up in Whitten, Iowa, and was a graduate of Drake University and after a tour in the U.S. Air force as a member of their music corps at the end of World War II, he completed his PhD at in Music Education at the University of Iowa. He then went on to teach at Shepherd's Town University in West Virginia and then was Chair of the Music department at Shippensburg State College, Pa., where he taught orchestra and band. After moving to Cleveland, he was head of Instrumental Music at Cleveland State and also taught at the high schools in the area, among other things concert bass, tuba, trombone and classical and electric guitar. He finally settled down to his own little music store, "The Village Music Shop" where he and his staff of teachers helped to bring our young people to the joy of music and fulfillment of their skills. As a member of the Dan Zola jazz band, he helped others relive the music of circa World War II with his electric bass. The Sea World Shamoo show started with his tuba and banjo startup act, many summers. He had great joy in all these things. He was a proud wood worker and leather tooler and as a youngster of 60, was an avid bicyclist and even completed the RAGRAI (bike race across Iowa). He and his wife, Erma helped to host over 60 students from 13 countries who came here to learn English as a second language. He was very difficult to slow down until Parkinson's disease claimed his health. Even then, he was always on the go, always interested in people and in sharing lots of stories. He always had a smile. He is loved and missed by his wife, Erma; son, Jonathan Fouts; daughter, Lucia Fouts; niece, Marilyn Chelsvig, and his friends in Fort Wayne and at Aldersgate Church. A brief memorial service is 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 21, 2013, at Aldersgate United Methodist Church. Visitation with family is from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 20, 2013, at 7822 Ladue Glen, Fort Wayne (IN 46804).
