JEAN RALPH SMITH, 96, passed away Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013 at The Cedars. Born in Logans-port, Jean played for the 1934 State Basketball Championship team, which earned him a basketball scholarship to Northwestern where he earned his Bachelor's Degree in History. He was a Locomotive Engineer with Pennsylvania Railroad for 37 years, retiring in 1977. He was a member of Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers & Firemen, and Wildwood Racquet Club. He loved gardening, being outdoors, sports, and spending time with his family. Surviving are his daughter, Silvia Jo Thorn of Fort Wayne; son, Andrew J. (Gwen) Smith of Clearwater, Fla.; sister, Maryellen Thorton of Brookston, Ind.; grandsons, Kenneth and Kevin Thorn, Bowie, MD. Jean was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Amy Smith; wife, Lois Smith; and brother, Mark Smith. Private Family Services. Burial in Leo Memorial Cemetery, Leo, Ind. D.O. McComb & Son's Pine Valley Park is handling arrangements.
