JEAN SWOPE NICKESON


JEAN SWOPE NICKESON, of Fort Wayne and Chautauqua, N.Y., died peacefully on Saturday, Nov. 24, 2012, at The Towne House Retirement Community following a short illness. Born Oct. 27, 1923, in Pittsburgh, Pa., she was the daughter of William Wylie and Alma Volbrecht Swope. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1945 from the University of Pittsburgh, and married Robert W. Nickeson, M.D. on May 18, 1946. They were married for 54 years, rearing seven children. She returned to Pitt to earn a Master's Degree in Public Health in the 1970's, serving on the Allegheny County Variance Board for Air Pollution Control. In retirement, she and her husband moved to Naples, Fla., where she lived until 2009. Surviving are children, Carol Nickeson Miller and partner, Kiril Sinkel of Belmont, Mass.; Elizabeth Nickeson (husband, Benjamin) Bilus of New Canaan, Conn., Dr. Robert W. (Nadine Spring) Nickeson Jr. of Safety Harbor, Fla., Nancy Nickeson Barr of Washington, D.C., Dr. David Christian Swope (Maryellen Oliver) Nickeson of Seabrook, Texas, Priscilla Joyce Nickeson (Howard) Halle of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Eric Edmund (Elizabeth) Nickeson of Fort Wayne; 17 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three nieces; and two nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dr. Robert W. Nickeson, in 2000; son-in-law, Michael Blanton Barr, in 2002; and sister, Marian S. Loveday, in 2004. Memorial service is 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, 2012, at The Towne House Retirement Community Chapel, 2209 St. Joe Center Road, with calling one hour prior. Chaplain Douglas Vogel officiating.
