M. MERCEDES VILLAGOMEZ, 100, of Decatur, died on Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2013, at her residence. Born Sept. 24, 1912, in Salamanca Gto, Mexico, she was the daughter of the late John and Isabel (Gutier rez) Ortiz. On Dec. 25, 1935, she married Anisceto Villagomez; he preceded her in death on May 31, 1986. Mercedes was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church and its Rosary Society. She was also a homemaker and was a Spanish interpreter for Judge Myles Parrish and a Den Mother for Cub Scout Troop 64. Survivors include two sons, Gerald (Alice) Villagomez and Roy (Lorraine) Villagomez, both of Decatur; five daughters, Pauline Medrano and Alice Jean Escamilla, both of Fort Wayne, Shirley Laguna of Decatur, Isabelle (Joel) Lehrman of Monroeville, and Rosemarie Villagomez of Decatur; a brother, Louie (Theresa) Ortiz of New Lenox, Ill.; 25 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four children; a brother; and four sisters. Mass of Christian Burial is 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013, at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church. Father Patrick Joseph officiating. Visitation is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013, at St. Mary's Parish Hall, with reciting of the Holy Rosary at 10 a.m. Burial in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
