MADELINE F. NICHOLAS

MADELINE F. NICHOLAS, 97, of Fort Wayne, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2013 at Parkview Regional Medical Center. She was born on March 8, 1915 in Boston, Mass., a daughter of Joseph and Mary (O'Brien) Higgins. In 1954 she moved to Fort Wayne with her husband, Francis R. Nicholas. He preceded her in death on July 28, 1978. Madeline was a member of St. Jude Catholic Church. She was a homemaker and a school aide at Forest Park Elementary School. "Madeline deeply loved her family, music, dancing, and her Boston roots." Surviving are her daughters, Carol (Thomas) Vodde of Fort Wayne; Joan (Steve) Shank of Indianapolis; sons, Kenneth (Linda) Nicholas, Robert (Anne) Nicholas both of Fort Wayne; Donald (Pam) Nicholas of Muncie; son-in-law, Sam (Kathy) Underhill of Fort Wayne; 14 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank; daughter, Elaine Underhill; grandson, Bernie Vodde; her parents; a brother; and three sisters. "Many thanks to the wonderful and caring staff at St. Anne Home where she resided for the last 6 1/2 years." To quote Madeline: "They must only hire kind people at St. Anne's." Mass of Christian Burial is 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013 at St. Jude Catholic Church with calling one hour prior. Father Tom Shoemaker officiating. Calling also from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 4, 2013 at D.O. McComb & Sons Maplewood Park Funeral Home, 4017 Maplecrest Rd. with a vigil at 7:30 pm. Burial in Catholic Cemetery.
