MERLE J. ALTSTIEL, 89, died on Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2013, at Parkview Regional Medical Center. Born Nov. 28, 1923, he was a son of the late Joseph and Marie Altstiel. He married Kathleen (nee Schlaack) on Nov. 6, 1942. They were happily married for over 65 years; she died on Sept. 1, 2008. They have two living sons, Dr. Larry (Dr. Martina Durner) Altstiel and Tom (Mary) Altstiel; and two grandsons, Mark (Christine) and Matt (Ellie). Merle spent three years in the Marine Corp during World War II. He graduated from Michigan State College in 1949. He worked in the Feed Sales Division of Central Soya for 36 years. He volunteered for Lutheran Social Services of Indiana for over 25 years. He started the Metro Area Paint-A-Thon, painting houses for low income seniors and the handicapped. He also worked with their Christmas Families Program. He received many local, state and national awards (over 17) for his volunteer leadership in the community. He also served on the Board of Directors for Lutheran Social Services of Indiana, The United Way of Allen County, Associated Churches, and several others. He also enjoyed fishing, bowling and golf. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Verne. Service is 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23, 2013, at Epiphany Lutheran Church, 6606 Maplecrest Road, with calling one hour prior. Calling also from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 22, 2013, at the church. Private entombment, with his wife, will follow the service at Concordia Cemetery, Fort Wayne. Arrangements by D.O.
