MERLE J. "JAKE" JOHNSON

MERLE J. "JAKE" JOHNSON, 87, of Columbia City, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 15, 2013, 8:05 p.m., at his home. He joined the Navy at 17 and served in World War II aboard the U.S.S. LST935. He married Gloria J. Gibson in 1947 and they resided in Waynedale. He worked for over 50 years for Phelps Dodge, retiring in 1991. He was a 60 year member of American Legion Post 241. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his grandchildren. Survivors include his son, Michael (Carol) Johnson of Columbia City; brother, Robert Johnson; sister, Dorothy Patton of Ossian; granddaughter, Jill Johnson of Indianapolis; grandsons, Jeffery Johnson and Alan (Trecia) Johnson, both of Waterloo; and great-granddaughter, Hailie Johnson. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Edith Johnson; wife; brothers, Raymond, Carl and Arlon; and sisters, Mary Doty and Norma Jean Snyder. Funeral service is 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec, 19, 2013, at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Drive, Columbia City, with visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. Memorial gifts may be given in Jake's memory to Parkview Whitley Home Health Care & Hospice.www.demoneygrimes.com
