NINA (VanAMAN) ROHM, 90, of McCordsville died on Thursday, Oct. 25, 2012. She was a resident of Pleasant View Nursing Home, since March of 2010. She was the last surviving child of John and Mary VanAman's five children. Apart from her military service, Nina spent her entire life in Indiana. She was a long-time beloved resident of Cromwell. She graduated from Ligonier High School in 1940 and earned a RN degree from Mercy Hospital, Toledo, Ohio, and a BS and MA degree in education from Indiana-Purdue University, Fort Wayne. She was a veteran of World War II and served in the Pacific as a nurse anesthetist. At that time, she saw the Enola Gay take off on its fateful mission to drop an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan. Returning to Indiana, she married and raised her children and worked as an obstetric nurse at Luckey Hospital, Wolf Lake, and a community health nurse for Kosciusko County. She moved on to a 21-year teaching career in the Cromwell and West Noble elementary schools. She had been widely recognized as a caring and successful teacher. After her retirement in 1987, she went on to teach adults, helping them qualify for GED degrees. She was a devout member of Saint Patrick's Catholic Church, Ligonier and loved all types of gardening. She was a life time member of the American Legion. Surviving family include her sister-in-law, Lorraine (Rohm) Brenneke; son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Julie Rohm; daughter and son-in-law, Rosalie and Frank Sparzo; daughter, Chelle VanWassenhove; grandchildren, Pete Bradley and Jason and Dana Higgs; step-grandchildren, Lori, Melissa, Darrel, John, Andrea, Chris and Jill; great-grandchildren, Carson, Madelyn, Pete, Jr., and Sammy; several nieces and nephews, and a multitude of friends. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Helen (VanAman) Harper and Mary (VanAman) Calbeck; brothers, Bill and John VanAman; daughter, Mary Elizabeth; son, James; and husband, Marion. Funeral Mass is 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, 2012, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Ligonier, with calling one hour prior. Father Wilson Corzo officiating. Calling also from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2, 2012, at Yeager Funeral Home, Ligonier, with verbal remembrances being shared with a Liturgy and Rosary beginning at 7 p.m. - led by Deacon Stan Lemieux. Burial will follow service in at Oak Park Cemetery, Ligonier, where full military honors will be conducted.
