ANSON SHUPE Obituary

DR. ANSON "ANDY" SHUPE, 67, of Bloomington, Ind., passed away Monday, May 4, 2015, 5:43 p.m., at IU Health Bloomington Hospital, Bloomington, Ind. Born Jan. 21, 1948, in Buffalo, N.Y., he was a son of Anson D. Shupe and Elizabeth Frances (Joslin) Shupe. Andy was a 1966 graduate of Mt. Lebanon High School in Mt Lebanon, Pa., a 1970 graduate of College of Wooster in Wooster, Ohio, and in 1975 graduated from Indiana University with his PhD in Sociology. He married Janet Ann Klickna on June 27, 1970, in Springfield, Ill. Andy worked as a college professor first at the University of Texas at Arlington for 12 years, and then at Indiana University Purdue University at Fort Wayne for 25 years, retiring in 2012. He was a respected authority on religion and social movements and wrote over 28 books on these subjects. He was a member of Beta Kappa Phi, an enthusiastic volunteer at WFHB Bloomington Community Radio, a martial artist with a double black belt in judo and karate. He lived in Japan and loved Asian languages and culture. He was also an accomplished archer, and loved reading, movies, music, history, writing books, and spending time with his family. Andy is survived by his wife, Janet A. Shupe of Bloomington, Ind.; daughter, Dr. Abigail Shupe (Dr. John Pippen) of Wooster, Ohio; one son, Andrew Shupe (Nora Zuckerman) of Los Angeles, Calif.; one brother, Russell (Valerie) Shupe of Albuquerque, N.M.; two sisters, Elizabeth Shupe of Liberty, Pa. and Clare (Mark) Seibel of Renton, Wash.; numerous aunts, uncles cousins, nieces and nephews; and his loyal canine companion, Tobey. He was preceded in death by his parents. Memorial service is 2 p.m. Friday, May 8, 2015, at Allen Funeral Home & Crematory, 4155 South Old State Road 37, with visitation from 1 to 2 p.m. Dr. John Pippen officiating. Cremation rites have been accorded. Memorial contributions may be made to WFHB Bloomington Community Radio Station; WFIU Radio Station; or donor's choice.
