BILL A. GARSHWILER, 88, of Fort Wayne and formerly of Irish Lake and Bippus, passed away Thursday, May 23, 2013 at 7:03 p.m. at Coving-ton Commons, Fort Wayne. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He started working at Bippus State Bank as a teller in 1947 and was promoted to assistant cashier in 1953. He advanced to cashier and secretary of the Board from 1963 to 1973, and became president in 1980. He started the branch in Huntington in 1985 and then helped build the new bank in Huntington in 1997. He retired from chairman of the Board in 2000. He was a former member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Huntington and a present member of St. Patrick Catholic Church of Arcola. He was a life member and past commander of American Legion Post #7, a member of Huntington VFW Post #2680 and 40 and 8 Huntington and Roanoke where he served as Chef-de-gare. Bill loved to fish, play cards, golf, read, support I.U. basketball, and be in the company of family and friends. He was born Nov. 28, 1924 in Wabash County, the son of Frank and Ruth (Hanselman) Garshwiler. On July 7, 1951 he married his beloved wife of 61 years, Ruth E. Bartrom in Huntington. She survives in Fort Wayne. Also surviving are two daughters, Linda (Thomas) Scribner of Fort Wayne, and Julie Garshwiler of Huntertown; a son, Tadd (Jean) Garshwiler of Huntertown; four grandchildren, Paul (Emily) Scribner of Jacksonville, N.C., Jenny (Jessie) Moore of Fort Wayne, Patrick (Jessamine) Scribner of Liberty Township, Ohio, Scott Garshwiler of Fort Wayne; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Evelyn Gradeless. Giving in death as he did in life, his mortal remains have been donated to I.U. Medical School. A celebration of life gathering will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 14, 2013 at Roanoke Memorial Chapel of Deal-Rice Funeral Homes. A memorial mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 15 at St. Patrick Catholic Church of Arcola, with a rosary service preceding at 10 a.m. Father Alex Dodrai will officiate.
