CARL A. GROMEAUX, 93, of Decatur, died on Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2013, 9:25 a.m., at his residence. Born Nov. 28, 1919, in Allen County, he was a son of the late Eli Grom eaux and Agnes (Gibson) Grom eaux. Carl served in the United States Army during World War II, rising to the rank of Private First Class. In the European Theater, during the Rhineland Campaign of 1944, he was captured by the Germans and spent time as a POW (prisoner of war). Carl married Dorothy A. Murphy on Sept. 22, 1945. He was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church, Monroeville; and American Legion Post 420 - Monroeville. Carl retired from International Harvester in 1976 with 30 1/2 years of service. Surviving are his wife of 67 years, Dorothy A. Gromeaux of Decatur; daughters, Sheila (James) Harrington of Hoagland, Ind. and Andrea (Dale) Gromeaux-Schnaith of Indianapolis, Ind.; three grandchildren, Ryann Harrington, Tarrah Altevogt and Brett Harrington; and seven great-grandchildren, Blake Altevogt, Aiden Altevogt, Hannah Harrington, Whitney Harrington, Gabriel Harrington, Grace Harrington, and Charlotte Harrington. He was also preceded in death by four brothers, Elmer, Gaylord, Merlin, and Leslie Gromeaux; and five sisters, Goldie Baker, Marcella Reuille, Pearl Gerardot, Theresa Thomas, and Velma Rohrbaugh. A prayer service is 9:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 4, 2013, at Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home, Jacobs Chapel, 111 South Water St., Monroeville. Mass of Christian Burial is 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 4, 2013, at St. Rose Catholic Church, Monroeville. Father Stephen Colchin officiating. Visitation is from noon to 3 and 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 3, 2013, at the funeral home, with a Rosary service at 4 p.m. Graveside military services will be conducted by the American Legion Post 420 Monroeville Color Guard. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Legion Post 420 of Monroeville or to St. Rose Catholic Church.
