CHARLOTTE A. KOOMJOHN, of Timonium, Md., died on Thursday, April 26, 2012, at her home. A native of Fort Wayne, she was a South Side High School alumna and also the salutatorian of her graduating class from the St. Joseph School of Nursing, in Fort Wayne. After a brief stint nursing, she went on to Saint Louis University where she took her undergraduate degree in 1952. She completed her Master's degree at the Miami University in Ohio, in 1957; and received her PhD in English from Rochester University in New York, in 1971. Dr. Koomjohn taught at the University of Southern Illinois in Carbondale, at Gettysburg University in Pennsylvania, and was an associate professor at Towson University in Baltimore, Md. She retired from Towson in 1997, having been a member of that faculty since 1971. A longtime contributor to many local, national and global charities, her generosity was especially supportive of environmental stewardship and hunger relief. She is survived by her sister, Dorothy Escosa of Fort Wayne; and brother and sister-in-law, John and Arline Koomjohn of Oswego, Ill. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Pearl Koomjohn; and sister, Marcelle. Dr. Koomjohn was highly respected by her professional colleagues and she will be missed by a wide circle of friends and all of her extended family. "Rest well, good and faithful servant." A memorial service is 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 5, 2012, at Trinity Episcopal Church, 611 West Berry St., Fort Wayne, where calling will take place one hour prior to the service.
