DAVID SPENCER DIX, died on Monday, Feb. 4, 2013. He was born on March 5, 1925. He retired from Zollner after 44 years. A lifelong member of Harlan United Methodist Church, he served on the building committee of the original church, taught adult Sunday school class since age 17, faithfully served on numerous church committees, assisted with the church grounds, was a lay leader for 15 years, and delivered inspiring and meaningful messages. Helping others, he was a member of the Harlan Lions Club for over 37 years, receiving the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award for Exemplary Service. He distributed over 30,000 pairs of glasses to the needy in Mexico. An American Red Cross volunteer, he served on 19 disaster relief missions, taught disaster training classes for 10 years, and donated 30 gallons and 5 pints of blood. He volunteered weekly for 14 years at Parkview Hospital. Active in the Harlan community, he served on the park board for over 67 years, since 1944, was involved in Harlan Days annually, and served as the Harlan Days Chairman twice. "Dave will be sorely missed doing many selfless actions that came naturally and without thought to him. Many people will miss seeing him on his daily walks, smiling and smoking his pipe, and wearing his ball cap, but we can take comfort in knowing he continues those walks on the streets of gold, Jesus at his side." He is survived by his devoted wife of 65 years, Edith; daughter, Suzanne (Rickey) Sargent of Wesley Chapel, Fla.; sons, Jim (Carlotta) Dix of Harlan and Sam (Maria) Dix of Lutz, Fla.; nephews raised as sons, Ralph (Kay) Swing of Clearwater, Fla. and Mike (Carla) Swing of Harlan; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Memorial service is 3 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8, 2013, at Harlan United Methodist Church, with calling two hours prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in David's name to Harlan United Methodist Church or Parkview Hospice. Online condolences may be shared at www.smithbrownfuneralhome.com
