DENIS JAMES GOONEN, 89, died on Sunday, Jan. 27, 2013. He retired from Sun Oil Company; was a Red Cross volunteer and employee for nine years. He was one of the founding members of the Allen County Youth Hockey League in the 1950's where he coached and was President. He served over 15 years at USA Hockey, first as Registrar and Vice President of the Mid Am District, and National Select Camp Tournament Coordinator. Denis was a USAC and CART Indy Racing official for over 30 years. He was a proud veteran having served in the Merchant Marines and was a member of American Legion Post 409, in Leo. Surviving are his wife, Helen M. Goonen (Jefferies); daughter, Kathy Goonen; and sister, Patricia Albertson of Wichita Falls, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents, Denis and Ruth (Shibley) Goonen; brothers, John and James Goonen; and sister, Rosemary Knuth. Funeral service is 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013, at Greenlawn Funeral Home & Memorial Park, 6600 Covington Road, Fort Wayne, with viewing one hour prior.
