GERALD E. (JERRY) GOGGIN, passed away on Friday, Nov. 2, 2012, at his home. Born Nov. 2, 1946 in Chicago, Ill., he was the son of Ida Belle (Reker) and Gerald E. Goggin. He graduated from Brother Rice High School, Evergreen Park, Ill. and Western Illinois University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting. He soon found he wanted to teach and went back to Chicago State University to gain his teaching certificate. His professional life was spent in the Chicago Public School System for six years. After moving to Fort Wayne, he taught at Sacred Heart Catholic School and Benoit Academy for thirty years. "Jerry was a "Teachers Teacher", his love of math, history, English and sports he passed on to his "students" as he always called them. He was a superb math teacher, able to inspire a love of math in all his classes." In 2003 he received the "Light of Learning Award" from the Diocese. A great athlete himself, he coached C.Y.O. girls' softball and volleyball teams with great enthusiasm, winning many championship titles. Anyone that knew Jerry could expect a conversation about Notre Dame, the Bears, Bulls, Sox or Blackhawks. He was a store house of sports information about all teams, not just his favorites. One of his long time co-workers, Shirley Omler, said of Jerry, "He would give you the shirt off of his back, he was one of the kindest people I have ever met". Surviving are his brothers, William (Joyce) and Michael (Patty); nieces, Katie Goggin, Megan (Marty) Gaughan, Lindsey (Tim) Arnold and Laura Goggin; nephews, Patrick Goggin and Shawn (Melissa) Goggin; great-nephews and nieces, James Arnold, Daniel, Patrick, Michael and Maggie Gaughan, Alex and Tim Pertoulakis, Devin, Zoe-Ellen and Ethan Goggin.
