ROBERT HELBLING "BOB" SANDY, 84, of Apple River, Ill., passed away on Thursday, July 18, 2013, at the Elizabeth Nursing Home. Born Feb. 26, 1929, in Kokomo, Ind., he was the son of Paul James and Bessie Mariann (Helbling) Sandy. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict from Jan. 5, 1951 until his honorable discharge as a Sergeant on Oct. 5, 1952. He married Jean Eash on Aug. 29, 1953. Bob graduated from Kokomo High School and went onto to the International Business College, Fort Wayne. He spent his life in banking for 35 years at Lincoln National Bank, Fort Wayne, and later at Lake City Bank, Warsaw, Ind. until his retirement. He was a member of the Optimist Club in Warsaw for 30 years; served on the Warsaw Cemetery Board for 20 years; and attended the Galena United Methodist Church. Involved in playing basketball and volleyball throughout his life, Bob especially loved to golf. He is survived by his wife; three children, Jeffrey Mark (Amy) Sandy of Chattanooga, Tenn., Roberta Jeanne (Dennis) Shadle of Woodburn, Ind. and Jennifer Lynne (Gregory) Vandigo of Apple River, Ill.;, two grandchildren, Benjamin James and Josephine Abigail Vandigo; and two brothers, Paul J. (Wanda) Sandy of Kokomo, and Don Glen Sandy of Madiera Island, Portugal. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Betty Catron; and a stepbrother, Lewis Wilson. "The family wishes to extend a special thank you to the staff at the Elizabeth Nursing Home for their care and compassion and the Furlong Funeral Home." Committal service is 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 3, 2013, at Oakwood Cemetery Chapel, Warsaw, with military honors presented by the American Legion Post 49 of Warsaw. Burial in Oakwood Cemetery.
