SYLVESTER MILLER, 87, of Fort Wayne, departed this life on Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2012. He was born near Ruleville, Miss. in 1925, a son of George Miller and Mamie (Bibbs) Miller. He married Louretta (Harris) Miller in 1954. They had three sons, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He became the first African American Salesman to work at a major downtown department store in Fort Wayne, Ind. "By treating all customers with dignity, respect, a smile and a friendly word, he served as a role model for many residents of the city." He was a Salesman for over 40 years at Wolf and Dessaur, Grand Leader, Stillman's, Sears, Meyers and McCarthy and Hudson's/ Marshall Fields. "He succeeded famously as a Salesman of men's fine suits and furnishings. He established enduring relationships with people of all walks of life." He retired as a Salesman in 1992. Surviving are his sons, Steve (Diane) Miller and Kevin Miller both of Fort Wayne, and Ronald (Nana) Miller of Lafayette, Ind.; six grandchildren, Diondra, Terron, Sheldon, Faith, Louise, and Rowan; two great-grandchildren, DyNishia and King; brother, George Miller of Miss.; sisters, Mamie Lewis of Miss., Susie Peacock, Nellie Miller and Berlean Burris all of Chicago, Ill.; a host of sister-in-laws; brother-in-laws; nieces; nephews; and extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Louretta Miller; parents, George and Mamie Miller; brothers, Glenn, Johnny, Henry and Hester Miller; sisters, Gertrude Haley and Rosya Dollison. Funeral service is 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2012 at Pilgrim Baptist Church, with visitation two hours prior. Burial in Lindenwood Cemetery. Arrangements by Carmichael Funeral Service.
