REV. WALTER L. BARTH, 101, passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2012, at Lutheran Life Villages, Fort Wayne. Born April 30, 1911, he was a son of Dr. and Mrs. G. Christian Barth in St. Louis, Mo. Walter served one year as Assistant to his father at Concordia Church, Cincinnati, Ohio. He then became Pastor of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Brazil, Ind. (1936 to 1940), Calvary Lutheran Church, Indianapolis, Ind. (1940 to 1955); Executive Secretary of Board of Directors of the Northern Nebraska District Lutheran Church (1955 to 1971); Associate Pastor of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Fort Wayne (1971 to 1977); and he retired from full time ministry as Pastor of Visitation of Zion Lutheran Church in 1985. He was Chaplan of South Side Optimist Club for 15 years and Chaplan of Woodview Health Care, Fort Wayne. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and the Optimist Club. In December of 1997, Rev. Barth published his Memoirs, the model of his life are the words of the Apostle St. Paul. "For me to Live is Christ and to die is Gain." He is survived by his daughter Sylvia (Ken) Haynes of Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.; son, Philip (Lucy) Barth of Greenwood, Ind.; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Dr. Karl Barth of Milwaukee, Wis. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elfrieda C. Barth, in 1984; and son, Warren C. Barth, in 1993. Funeral service is 1 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2, 2012, at Zion Lutheran Church, 2314 South Hanna St., with calling one hour prior. Calling also from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, 2012, at D.O. McCombs & Sons, Covington Knolls Funeral Home, 8325 Covington Road. Burial in Concordia Cemetery Gardens.
