DOUGLAS THEDRIK MacDOWALL, 86, of Auburn, passed away on Monday, April 23, 2012, at Northern Lakes Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Angola. He was a first generation American. Born July 26, 1925, in Chicago, Ill., his parents were naturalized American citizens. Roy MacDowall was English and Margaret (Eyvindson) MacDowall was Icelandic. Roy and Margaret met and married in western Canada prior to emigrating to the United Stated after World War I. Upon graduation from South Side High School, Fort Wayne. He joined the United States Marine Corps and served in the Pacific during World War II. After an honorable discharge from the Marines, he attended Indiana University in Bloomington. There he met Martha J. Spellman of Independence, Kan. They married on Nov. 19, 1950 in Nashville, Ind. Douglas and Martha moved to Auburn Indiana in 1961 where they raised their eight children. She preceded Doug in death on July 10, 2002. "He missed her very much." He worked at a variety of occupations and companies, including car salesman, independent grain hauler, Lear Corporation, Magnavox, Phelps Dodge. While at ITT in the early and mid-1950s, he worked on early television and the construction of the Distant Early Warning Line (DEW Line) stations in the Arctic Circle in Alaska and the Northern Territories of Canada. He found his avocation as an agricultural irrigation equipment account manager for Century Rain Aid. He was an excellent amateur photographer, a hobby he pursued while he enjoyed his other favorite pastimes exploring the outdoors and driving the back roads of Indiana and the United States. He was able to enjoy both up until the last year of his life. He also had a variety of other interests and hobbies including: fly fishing, building and using telescopes, the Internet and reading. He is also survived by his eight children, Leslie W. (Mary) MacDowall of Lafayette, Sarah P. (Jim) Levin of Pasadena Calif., Carolyn M. (Russell) Heffner, Christopher D. MacDowall, and Hilary K. (Randy) Books of Fort Wayne, Elizabeth A. (Jon) Huffman of Plymouth, Mary M. (Jeff) Miles of Angola and Amy V. (James) McPhail of Waterford, Mich.; nine grandchildren, Elizabeth, Carolyn, Thomas, and Christopher Levin, Joseph and Margaret Books, Melissa, Andrew, and Lauren Miles; one great-grandchild, Miles Cameron of Angola.; and brother, Ian MacDowall of Fresno, Calif. In keeping with Douglas' wishes there will be no public service. Private family services will be held at a later date.
