VIRGIL LEROY SHOWALTER, 96, of Fort Wayne, died on Wednesday, May 9, 2012, at Hamilton House. Born in Warsaw, he was the son of the late Vernon and Opal Showal ter. In the 1930's, he was a paper carrier for The Journal Gazette for 15 years. He was a Boy Scout and leader for over 35 years; and also was a World War II Army veteran. He retired from Peter Eckrich & Sons after 38 years of service. He is survived by his sons, Donald (Cindy) of Fort Wayne and Keith (Melanie) of Indianapolis; daughters, Carolyn (Donald) Nicole of Fort Wayne and Donna (Ron) Hanson of Marble Falls, Texas; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Elsie J., in 2001; brothers, Paul, Kenneth and Cloice; and sisters, Katherine Leason, Virginia Snyder and Violet Gantz. Funeral service is 10 a.m. Saturday, May 12, 2012, at Covington Memorial Gardens, 8408 Covington Road, with calling one hour prior to service. Calling also from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 11, 2012, at the funeral home. He will be laid to rest in Covington Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial are to Heartland Hospice.
