CARL J. YURECHKO, 82, of Merrillville, Ind., passed away on Wednesday, May 9, 2012. He was a retired employee of U.S. Steel after 32 years and Burns Funeral Home after 18 years. He was a member and past officer of Knights of Columbus St. Thomas Council 1347. He was an originator and charter member of Knights of Columbus Santa Maria Venegas Assembly, 4th Degree. He was one of the pioneers of the Tootsie Roll Campaign sponsored by the K of C. He also served two years as Indiana State Warden and was state retention chairman of the Indiana State Knights of Columbus. He was Chairman of Slovak Day for 39 years. He was a former member of Holy Trinity Church, in Gary and a current member of St. Joan of Arc, in Merrillville. He was survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Elizabeth "Betty" (nee. Sohovich) Yurechko of Merrillville; four children, Kathleen Yurechko of Fort Wayne, John (Carol) Yurechko of Hebron, Michael (Marsha) Yurechko of Valparaiso, and Patricia (William) Bielak of Hobart; 11 grandchildren, Edward (Kim) Pavicich, Christopher (Trudy Barnes) Pavicich, Christine (J. T.) Eads, Samantha Yurechko, Jason (Missy) Yurechko, Tracey Yurechko (Robin Peeler), Jennifer Yurechko (fiancé, Steve Gard), Sarah (Marcus) Rowe, Melissa Yurechko, Matthew Yurechko, and Amanda Bielak (Glen Peterson); and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mary Yurechko; and son, William. Funeral service is 10:15 a.m. Monday, May 14, 2012, at Burns Funeral Home, 10101 Broadway, Crown Point, Ind. Mass of Christian Burial is 11 a.m. at St. Joan of Arc Church, 200 E. 78th Ave., Merrillville. The Rev. Andrew Corona and the Rev. Joseph Vamos con- celebrating. Friends may visit with Carl's family from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday, May 13, 2012, at K of C St. Thomas Council 1347 will recite the Rosary at 6 p.m. Interment in Calumet Park Cemtery, Merrillville, Ind.
