JOHN LEAVELL, 92, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 11, 2012, at his home. He resided in Yoder and was formerly of Fort Wayne. He retired from Interna tional Harvester after 31 years. He was a Sergeant in the Army, serving during World War II as a communications linesman during which he received a Purple Heart, Bronze Star Medal, Good Conduct Medal and EAME Theater Ribbon with five Bronze Stars. Prior to joining the Army, he served in the Indiana District Civilian Conservation Corps. He was a former member of the Moose Lodge and a former Mason of the Masonic Temple. He also was a Boy Scout Leader. "John was a loving, caring man that always had a smile for everyone." He enjoyed reading his daily paper, watching the birds at the bird feeder and spending time with his beloved dog, Tinkerbell. He is survived by his son, Donald (Susan) Leavell of Georgetown, Texas; daughters, Debra (Jack Jr.) Gaham of LaGrange, Karen (Roger Sr.) Richey of Melbourne, Fla. and LaVone (Larry) Neely of Yoder; brothers, Fred (Kathy) Leavell of Hicksville, Ohio, Edward Leavell of Waterloo, Iowa; sisters, Elsie Love of Harlan, Mary (Bob) Brown of Garrett and Rose Battenberg of Santa Rosa, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by wives, Della (Battenberg) Leavell and Leyoda (Thomas) Leavell; parents, Oran and Blanch Leavell; and five sisters. Service is 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 16, 2012, at D.O. McComb & Sons Foster Park Funeral Home, 6301 Fairfield Ave., with calling one hour prior. Pastor Richard Dickson officiating. Calling is from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, May 15, 2012, at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Elmhurst Church of the Nazarene or A.S.P.C.A.
