LAWRENCE "LARRY" R. SHUMAN, 74, died on Saturday, July 7, 2012, ending his 13 year battle with emphysema, at Vibra Hospital, Fort Wayne. Born Sept. 28, 1937, in Daville, Ill., he was the son of Earl Wesley and Nora Magdalena (Henk) Shuman. As a youth, he attended Hoagland Avenue Elementary School, two years at Central High School, and graduated from Victory High School, Clarksburg, W.V. in 1955. He served in the US Army Transportation Corps, attending training at Fort Eustis, Va., where he was assigned as a Harbor Craft Crewman on a Landing Craft Unite (LCU) with the 81st Transportation Company (boat) in Soulac, Gironde, Aquitaine, France and was honorably discharged in 1958. He worked for Hill Brother's Self Service Shoes starting in 1959 as an Assistant Manager and soon advanced into managerial positions, including Regional Manager. In 1967, he entered the grocery business with Reitz Stores Inc. (Scott's Foods) working in and expanding numerous locations as Vice President, until their merger in 1979. He owned and operated Shuman's IGA on East State Street for several years, and then was employed as Account Executive with Scot Lad Foods, he retired in 1990. He spent the following years working at the Indiana Auto Auction until 1997. He was a former member of the Elk's and the Sons of the American Legion 499. Golf was his great pleasure throughout adult years, playing virtually every course in the Fort Wayne area. He especially enjoyed visiting courses in the southern states, and the Bahama's. Surviving are a spouse, Nancy Lee (Steele) of Fort Wayne; sons, Richard M. (Minsook) of Fort Wayne, Derek L. (Audrey) of Palm Desert, Calif., and Glen S. (Holly) and Dale Shaw both of Fort Wayne; daughters, Deborah G. (Ed) Handshoe of Shipshewana, Danne' R. (Terry) Smith of New Haven, Judith L. Salsbury of Grabill, and Karen S. Knapp of New Haven; 21 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; brothers, Patrick F. (Hazel) Shuman of Baker, Fla., James W. Shuman of Ocala, Fla. and Daniel J. Liles of Wabash; sisters, Sandra Shuman and Darlene Howard. He was preceded in death by his brother, Louis E. on June 24, 2000; and his daughter, Gayle Ferrell on Sept. 10, 2009.
