RICHARD ARTHUR BATES SR., 70, of Fort Wayne, departed this life on Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2012. He was born on May 7, 1942, in Fort Wayne. He graduated from Central High School, Fort Wayne. He attended Drake University on an athletic scholarship and graduated with a Bachelor's Degree. In 2006, he retired as Projector Director of the Youth Offender Program for the Iowa Department of Corrections, 5th district - in Des Moines, Iowa. Surviving are his sons, Richard (Wilma) Bates Jr. of Bloomington, Ill. and Darryl (Donna) Bates Sr. of Newark, Del.; mother, Lucille Hill of Fort Wayne; brother, James (Sheila) Bates Jr. of Fort Wayne; six grandchildren, Darryl Jr. (Natalie), Darreisha, Keita, Torrence, Kai, and Zenobia; great-grandchild, William; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Bates; and father, James Bates Sr. Funeral service is 1 p.m. Saturday at Carmichael Funeral Service, with visitation one hour prior. Burial in Lindenwood Cemetery. Arrangements by Carmichael Funeral Service.
