GERTRUDE "GERTIE" DETTMER, of Fort Wayne, passed away comfortably on Friday, Jan. 25, 2013, at her home. "She was our beloved mom, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and sister-in-law." In her final months, Gertie enjoyed meaningful time with many loving family members and caregivers. Born Feb. 4, 1917, in Decatur, she was a daughter of Charles and Caroline Schroeder. Gertie was the sixth of eight children and was preceded in death by all of them. In 2005, she lost the love of her life, Siemon "Sim" Dettmer, also from Fort Wayne. "Mom and Dad met when Sim's harvesting crew worked the Schroeder farm and Gertie helped serve lunch. They fell in love, raised four children and were blessed to celebrate 68 years of marriage together." Gertie spent her life in the Fort Wayne area where she and Sim were familiar faces and active members at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church for 50 years. In later years, they attended St. Peter's Lutheran Church. Following Sim's death in 2008, the family was blessed by the arrival of Doris Sanders, Gladys Smith and Sheronda Smith. Gertie wanted to remain in her home, and the passionate devotion and expert care given her by these amazing women made her wish possible. Gertie will be remembered for her sweetness and unwavering faith in Jesus. She loved her confirmation verse, John 15:5, and recited it often: "I am the vine, ye are the branches. He that believeth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit. For without me, ye can do nothing."
