GUSTAV J. SCHMIEMAN, 92, passed away Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013 at Lutheran Life Villages in Fort Wayne. Born in Fort Wayne, Gustav was a World War II P.O.W. and Army Veteran earning many medals including the Purple Heart. He was a Purdue University Graduate and retired from American Hoist & Derrick in 1982 after a 42 year career, starting as an apprentice welder and working post war as an engineer achieving the position of plant supervisor. He was a member of St. Therese Catholic Church, and their Holy Name Society, Ex P.O.W.- Fort Wayne Chapter, American Legion #296, Knights of Columbus #9460, and V.F.W. #1006. Surviving are his wife, Helen Schmieman of Fort Wayne; son, Timothy (Janeen) Schmieman of Yoder; daughters, Lynn Winter of Sonoma, Calif., Rita Schmieman of Harrison, Ohio; stepdaughter, Mary Lou (Dennis) Doehrman Bride of Spring Hill, Fla.; brother, William Schmieman of Nampa, Idaho; six grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Karl and Gertrude Schmieman; first wife, Marjorie Schmieman; brothers, Thomas and Robert Schmieman; and step-son, David Doehrman. Mass of Christian Burial is 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2013 at St. Therese Catholic Church with calling one hour prior. Calling also from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2013 at D.O. McComb & Sons Foster Park Funeral Home, 6301 Fairfield Avenue, with a vigil service at 6:30 pm. Burial in Catholic Cemetery, Fort Wayne, Ind. Memorials may be made to St. Therese Catholic Church.
