DONALD P. SPALDING JR., 93, of Erie, Pa., died on Sunday, Feb. 17, 2013, at the Sarah A. Reed Retirement Center. Born April 25, 1919, in Baltimore, Md., he was a son of the late Donald P. Spalding Sr. and Mildred (Camp) Spalding. Donald served in World War II as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army - Pacific Theater in Hawaii and Okinawa. He was a graduate of California Institute of Technology, attended M.I.T. and Oregon State University. He was employed at the Erie General Electric as an electrical engineer for 34 years. He was a member of the Simpson - Cascade United Methodist Church, was treasurer of their foundation and trustee; a member of the Sons of the American Revolution; and also a former member of the Erie Yacht Club. He was active in the Boy Scouts, enjoyed sailing, woodworking, photography, astronomy, geology and was an avid reader. He is survived by two sons, John D. (Donna Livant) Spalding of Ann Arbor, Mich. and James A. (Anna) Spalding of Ossian; grandchildren, Audrey Rhobie Spalding, Charles Livant Spalding, Megan Elizabeth Spalding, Matthew James Spalding, and Melanie Ann Spalding; and brother, William (Marjorie) Spalding of San Diego, Calif. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret (Bishop) Spalding. Funeral service is 11 a.m. Friday at Simpson - Cascade United Methodist Church, 2213 Sassafras St., with visitation 10 a.m. until the time of service. The Rev. Ray Speakman officiating.
