DONALD W. BENDER, 86, passed away on Friday, Aug. 8, 2014, at Kingston Care Center, Fort Wayne. Born in Fort Wayne, Donald quit high school to serve his country in the U.S. Navy at the last stages of World War II. After the Navy, he served in the U.S. Army. After his military service, he entered law enforcement and served five years with the Allen County Sheriff's Department and 20 years with the Fort Wayne Police Department. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Lake Township. He had a special love for his grandchildren and enjoyed spending his time woodworking, fishing, and "shooting the breeze." Surviving are his wife, Evelyn Bender of Fort Wayne; daughter, Terry Lynn (Jim) Meggett of Bay Saint Louis, Miss.; son, Martin A. (Peggy) Bender of Fort Wayne; daughter, Donna Jean (Rocky) Mease of Derby, Kan.; daughter, Sharon Ann (Steve) Geiger of Wolf Lake, Ind.; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and sister, Wanda Bollinger of Angola, Ind. He was preceded in death by his parents, Amon and Clara Bender. Funeral service is 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 11, 2014, at D.O. McComb & Sons Lakeside Park Funeral Home, 1140 Lake Ave., with calling one hour prior. The Rev. Ralph Easterhaus officiating. Calling also from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 10, 2014, at D.O.
