BARBARA J. BENTZ, 84, of Huntington, died Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2014, 9:50 p.m., at Markle Health & Rehabilitation Center. Born Oct. 21, 1929, in Gary, she was the daughter of Franklin Dale and Marjorie A. (Copeland) Allman. She was salutatorian of the Roanoke High School class of 1947. She married Wayne H. Bentz on June 27, 1948, in Roanoke. Barbara helped her husband farm in Jackson and Clear Creek Townships. She worked for International Harvester in Fort Wayne for 10 years, and was co-owner of the trap and skeet range in Clear Creek Township for 20 years. Barbara retired in 1988 after working as a professional legal secretary, the first person to hold this title in the state of Indiana. Barbara was a member of The Daughters of the Nile, Mizpah Temple in Fort Wayne. She proudly held the title of First Lady of the Mizpah Temple in 2003. Other memberships include Seminary United Methodist Church in Roanoke, the Monday Club and The Lunch Bunch Bridge Club, both in Huntington. Barbara enjoyed shooting sports along with hunting and fishing. She had deep love for animals, especially dogs. Reading was an important part of her life as well. Barbara is survived by her husband of 66 years, Wayne H. Bentz of Huntington; one son, Samuel W. (Joyce) Bentz of Huntington; two daughters, Sally M. Hartman of Huntington and Beverly J. (Toby) Hullinger of Monroeville; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; and two sons-in-law, James Hartman and Byron Fromm. There will be no visitation or funeral services. A private graveside service will be held at later date with the Rev. Richard Bunnell officiating.
