DR. MILTON MELVIN MORGAN, of Fort Wayne, departed this life Sunday, Dec. 12, 2010, at Parkview Hospital. Born June 19, 1928, in Greenwood, Miss., he was the sixth of eight children and the son of Edgar and Ollie Morgan. He graduated from Meharry Medical College with distinction. He completed his surgical internship and residency at Barnes and Homer G. Phillips Hospitals in St. Louis, Mo. While in St. Louis, he met his soul mate, Gwendolyn, who was a nurse at Homer G. Phillips Hospital. After marrying they moved to Fort Wayne where he established a medical practice specializing in General Surgery, on Lafayette Street. Ultimately, he relocated his office to South Calhoun Street where he continued to practice medicine until he retired in 2008 after a successful 46 year career. The decision to retire was a difficult one, as Dr. Morgan had a deep affection for his patients, and often said, "My patients need me, and I need them. He will be sorely missed by his family, friends and patients, but will leave a legacy of a firm belief in staying close to the Lord." His memories will forever be cherished by his beloved wife, Gwen who displayed an indefatigable loyalty; daughters, Janet and Lori; two devoted sons-in-law, Ernest Wilkerson and Brian Maxey; and two beautiful and vivacious grandchildren, Jillian Wilkerson and Braylon Maxey. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edgar and Ollie Morgan; brothers, David and Bradford Morgan; sister, Bernice Webb and his twin sister, Mildred Lever. A Celebration of Life service is 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 18, 2010, at Turner Chapel AME Church, with a calling one hour before service. Entombment in Lindenwood Cemetery. Dr. Morgan's final wish was to establish an academic scholarship for the youth. To that end, the family created the Milton M. Morgan M.D. Scholarship Fund. Donations may be sent to Turner Chapel A.M.E. Church, 836 East Jefferson Blvd., Fort Wayne, IN 46803. c/o Gwendolyn J. Morgan. Arrangements by Ellis Funeral Home.
