HARRIS H. HOEFFEL SR., 89, of Garrett, died on Monday, Feb. 14, 2011, at Miller's Merry Manor, Garrett. Born Feb. 7, 1922, in Garrett, he was the son of the late Ignatius "Nate" and Emma Hoeffel. He was a graduate of Saint Joseph Catholic School, Garrett and Wittenberg College. He served as a 1st Lieutenant in the Army Air Corp in World War II and was a member of American Legion Post 178 in Garrett. He was the former owner of Hoeffel's Meats in Garrett, retiring in 1988. He was a volunteer fire fighter for the City of Garrett for 32 years, head of the Civil Defense and former Mayor of Garrett from 1976 to 1980. He was a member of Saint Joseph Catholic Church, Garrett where he served as a deacon for the Catholic Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend; and was a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Naomi Ann Hoeffel; sons, Matt Hoeffel of Auburn, Nate Hoeffel of Fort Wayne and Chris Hoeffel of Garrett; daughters, Cande Bishop, Holly Custer and Deb Saylor, all of Garrett; 14 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and sister, Josephine Paul of Sarasota, Fla. He was preceded in death by a son, Harris H. "Punk" Hoeffel Jr., in 2009; daughter, Mary Hoeffel, in 2009; and sister, Elvis "Tootie" Binz. Mass of Christian Burial is 10:30 a.m., Thursday, with visitation from 9:45 to 10:30 a.m., at Saint Joseph Catholic Church, 300 Houston St., Garrett. Visitation also from 2 to 5 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, with recital of the rosary at 4:30 p.m., at Pinnington-McComb Funeral & Cremation Services, 502 N. Main St., Auburn.
