JOHN E. GILLIG, 81, of Fort Wayne, formerly of Decatur, passed away on Monday, June 27, 2011, at Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne. He was a resident of Saint Anne Home. Born June 29, 1929, he was the son of the late Leo T. and Florence L. (Kohne) Gillig. He was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, Decatur. He was the former pastor of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, Decatur. He also served at Our Lady of Hungary, South Bend; St. Monica, Mishawaka; St. Jude, Fort Wayne; Sacred Heart, Fort Wayne; and Holy Family, South Bend, retiring in 1988. He was chaplain of Fort Wayne Police Department, Fort Wayne Fire Dept., Allen County Sherriff Department, and Indiana State Police. He is survived by five brothers, Al Gillig and Tony (Ruth) Gillig, both of Decatur, Dave (Mary) Gillig of Fort Wayne, Don (Barb) Gillig of Jerome, Mich., and Jerry (Joan) Gillig of St. Joseph, Mo.; and two sisters, Rosemary (John) Sheley of Danville, Ind. and Marcella (Ron) Smith of Bluffton. Mass of Christian Burial is noon Friday, July 1, 2011, at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, Decatur, Visitation from 11 a.m. to noon. The Rev. Fr. Stephen E. Colchin officiating. Visitation also from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 30, 2011, at Haggard-Sefton & Hirschy Funeral Home, with a reciting of the Holy Rosary at 3:30 p.m. Burial in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
