GREGORY JAMES "GREG" POWERS, 49, passed into a better life Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2012, in Hendersonville, Tenn. "He was our dear brother." Born March 12, 1963, in Kalamazoo, Mich., he grew up in Fort Wayne and graduated from North Side High School. He married Melinda May 21, 1993 at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas. They both served in the U.S. Army. He became a gunsmith in Colorado in 1990 prior to joining the Army. He was a gentle, artistic man who was handy with metals and leather. He enjoyed medieval sword fighting and crafted many sets of armor. He enjoyed kayaking with his wife. "He was a big kid at heart with a great sense of humor. He will be missed by many friends and family members." He is survived by wife, Melinda; children, Joe (Angie) Compton and Rachael Compton, both of Honolulu, Hawaii; sisters, Marie (George) Stephenson, Kathleen, JoAnn and Eva Powers, all of Fort Wayne, Theresa (Mark) Arnold of Lakewood, Colo., and Elizabeth of Minnesota; brothers, Mike (Linda) of Hudson and John, both of Fort Wayne; many nieces and nephews; plus many great and great-great nieces and great and great-great nephews, aunts, and uncles. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Margaret (Crimmins) Powers; grandparents, Daniel and Mary (Schnebelt) Powers, and Leo and Lucille (Kilroy) Crimmins; brothers, Patrick and Larry; sister, Ann; nephew, Evan Powers; and great-nephew, Xander Powers. A memorial service will be held at a later date in St. Jude Catholic Church, Fort Wayne. There was a cremation.
