My memory of Ron to this day is of his kindness, consideration of others and his true professionalism as a representative of the electronic media in Fort Wayne, Indiana. His standards in that regard were rarely matched by newcomers to the craft, from what I observed as a News-Sentinel journalist.

I worked with Ron from 1968 to 1970 as a cameraman at WANE-TV. He was a great guy. I am sad that he is gone at such a young age.

I knew Ron from the other side of the camera. I worked at the City of Fort Wayne during the Henry administration. Ron was nothing but a class act; I called him the elder statesman of the Fort Wayne press corps. He always had a smile on his face, asked really good questions during interviews/press conferences and put everyone around him at ease. His kind personality and professionalism will be missed.

To Ron's family,
Ron covered a lot of the Mayor's news conferences in the 1990s. With or without a reporter in tow, he asked the right questions and got terrific photos. He was kind, professional and fun. I loved when our paths would cross through the years, and when I came back to City government a few years ago, Ron was still showing up to ask the questions and get the pictures. He was one of the truly good guys. I am proud to have known him.

Kathy and family, my sympathy and prayers go out to you. I was lucky enough to work with Ron back in the 80's and we quickly became friends. I'll always admire his true love of people and his warm smile.

Ron was my first boss in TV in 1984. He hired me as a News Photographer. By hiring me, he started my television career that has continued for 28 years. He saw something in me that I didn't see in myself. I will always remember him asking me to edit the P-51 Mustang flight video to the music cut, "Take On Me". He loved that experience and I was honored to be asked to edit something so personal and dear to him.
Ron was not only a boss, but a true friend. He loved God, he loved his family and friends, he loved his job, and he loved life. I have always looked up to Ron and I continue to do so as my career in television continues. He always said you have to love what you do. That has been my driving force in my career and I am still doing what I love. For all of us that knew him, we were blessed. There are not a lot of people like Ron. He will be truly missed.
May God comfort Kathy and the rest of the family.

To the Harmeyer family,
I am so sorry for your loss. I will never forget my first meetings with Ron when he covered the Prosecutor's race in 2002 and later when I was elected. I cannot tell you how much his kindness and professionalism meant to me. What a great smile! He was so good at putting everyone at ease! There are so few like him and he will be greatly missed! He was one of a kind.

Col. Harmeyer and I shared a love of airplanes and flew a number of photo "missions" together. He was all smiles in the back seat of a P-51 Mustang as it roared past my window -upside down. The man was fearless.

Congratulations, Ron, for a life well-lived.

A true gem of a gentleman. He had a knack to bestow his likability on everyone, even to representatives of the "competition." Once in a while I would see Ron at community events and press conferences and he always showed genuine interest in my life and career.
When I think of Ron, I'll always envision him lugging all that heavy camera and lighting gear around. I asked him once,"Isn't that hard on your knees and hips?" He responded, "What knees and hips?" Rest in peace Ron but, I'm betting God has a lot of assignments for you in His Kingdom.

Dear Harmeyer family, Ron made a profound impact on my career when I started as an unpaid intern at WANE-TV. When he and I would go out on stories, he always treated me as a colleague, never as an intern. He was kind, insightful, supportive and a true class act. Years later when we'd see each other at news conferences or other stories, he always greeted me with a huge smile and a sincere inquiry about how things were going in my life. Please know that Ron will be dearly missed.

Sincerely,

I was very sorry to hear about Ron's death. He was one of the very positive things about WANE TV during the three years I worked there in the late 90s. I have many joyful memories of Ron. We used to do news stories on events or issues in the small towns surrounding Fort Wayne and we always had fun trying to find the down home restaurant with the best Beef Manhattan. And I remember our trip to Chicago to do a story on the Mancow show and how we interviewed Chris Farley. Ron and I also won best investigative report from AP for our story on daycare dangers. Ron always had a positive outlook and was totally professional and it was always a joy to work with him.
And I admire his dedication for staying in a profession and at a station for 48 years. Ron, here's hoping you're having a great Beef Manhattan in Heaven right now!

I keep remembering all the stories you and I went out on for WANE-TV and I can see clearly today you hoisting that heavy camera up on your shoulder and looking for that perfect shot! I remember going "live" for the six in a snow storm in front of the WANE-TV station. I literally blew over in the snow just before we went on and you came over and picked me up, brushed me off and we were "on". We laughed and laughed so hard we could hardly get through the shot! Those are the fun times I remember with you Ronnie! I will miss you!

Over the last couple of days I've read all the accolades written about Ron on several different webpages. Although I did have the opportunity to see and visit with Ron at the 2006 St. Jude reunion, previous to that, I had not seen him since we graduated from SJ in 1959. What a wonderful, wonderful man he turned out to be! Ron was a unique, giving man who obviously brought joy to everyone with whom he came in contact. Kathy and family, you continue have my prayers...

I had the great privilege of working with Ron at WANE-TV, and I consider him to be the Bob Sievers of Fort Wayne television. Bob was "Mr. WOWO" and I think of Ron as "Mr. WANE." Ron was a true professional, from the "old school," and a true gentleman as well. I've lived and worked my entire life in Fort Wayne, and have never worked with any finer, kinder man than Ron. My sincerest prayers go out to his family, and I also pray that Ron Harmeyer never be forgotten in the history of Fort Wayne television. May our loving God bless your spirit, my dear friend, Ron.

Ron first taught me the production ropes at WANE in the summer of 1969 when I started there in the studio as a cameraman. He was an awesome mentor, friend and co-worker. He was always positive, full of fun and the consummate professional. He often “warmed-up” the live studio audience of ladies for the Ann Colone show and had them laughing. He was one of our cast of performing wackos on the weekly “Harry Ganey” movie theater… the “Teeterboardinis” and more. I even remember him filling in for Dave King on the afternoon “Dialing for Dollars” show. “Ron, it was an honor and a privilege to know and work with you. Rest in peace my friend.”

I worked at the News-Sentinel as Chief Photographer for 38 years. During that time I would be at happenings where I would met Ron in our work. I always remember Ron as the one of two guys in TV that I respected and he always had a good word or help for me. The other was Ollie Strong who was a photographer for WKJG. I retired 22 years ago but I still remember Ron as he was not easy to forget. The Harmeyer family is in my prayers.

Are you ever really prepared??? You work with a person for over 20 years and the time comes when God says its time to come home. Ron Harmeyer was a true professional and a friend to everybody. I will always remember Ron saying...Hey brother...Hows your day going. He loved any story where he could fly. That was Ron. He was a one of a kind and will always be missed. Love you man. I spoke with you a few short weeks ago when you stopped in to see the new HD studio. I knew that would be the last time I would ever speak to you. You were a pioneer in television and saw all of the changes. You were a true professional respected by all of the elite in Fort Wayne. You were one of a kind and you can never be replaced. Hey brother... Love you man.

Kathy and family, My sympathy and prayers go out to you. I remember when Uncle Ron and Aunt Kathy were our chaperones for an outing we had in Michigan (probably back in the 1970's). Jeff DeWeese and some of his high school friends (myself included) were your responsibility for the trip. Uncle Ron had such a good sense of humor and kept us laughing the whole time! To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

To the Family:
My sympathy and prayers are with you.
I became acquainted with Ron during my years as a reporter with The News-Sentinel and a few years ago had the opportunity to renew that acquaintance at an event we both covered in Huntington.
Ron was a great, down-to-earth gentleman and to me set the standard in what a person in the electronic media, and the media in general, should be.
