MICHAEL KAST Obituary

MICHAEL H. KAST, 85, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2013, at home in his home town of Fort Wayne. A well respected Allen County attorney, he started his law practice in 1955 as a sole practitioner before joining the late Willard Shambaugh to form the law firm Shambaugh & Kast in 1961. Adding Edward Beck, in 1972, and Stephen Williams in 1980 to become Shambaugh, Kast, Beck & Williams. A 1946 graduate of Central Catholic High School, he completed his B.S. in the School of Business and L.L.B. (Juris Doctorate) in the School of Law at Indiana University in 1952. He was inducted into the U.S. Army in 1952 during the Korean War, commissioned as a First Lieutenant in the Army JAG Corps, served as Post Judge Advocate, and remained active in the JAG Reserve, first in the Army and later the Air Force, until his retirement as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1976. As a practicing attorney, civic activities over the course of his career included serving as Associate City Attorney, Chief Deputy Prosecuting Attorney of Allen County, President of Legal Aid of Fort Wayne, and Indiana Governor appointment as a member of the State Advisory Commission for Legal Services Corp. An avid runner, he started running at age 47 for health reasons and went on to complete multiple marathons in Boston, Chicago and San Francisco, among other cities. He also coached the cross country team at IPFW. He enjoyed golf, tennis, skiing and spending time with family and friends. Surviving are his wife, Cheryl Kast; sons, Mark Kast of Reno, Nev. and Dr. John Kast of Florence, Ala.; daughter, Ann (Kast) Train of Santa Rosa, Calif.; his children's mother, Jean Bevis of Charlottesville, Va.; and five grandchildren. I just learned of Mr. Kast's passing. I have fond memories of him. I knew him in Ft. Wayne when he had his law office. Later I moved to California and he and his daughter stayed with me in my little apt for the 1984 Olympics. We had great fun. He will be missed. Blessings and peace to all the family. Angie Matte

I just learned of Mr. Kast's passing today. While it saddened me, it's soothing to know he is at peace in Heaven. I had the honor and pleasure of working for Mr. Kast @ SK&B(W) from 1977-1988 and enjoyed my time there. God's blessings to the family.
