GLENN CROWL Obituary

GLENN J. CROWL, 96, passed away Friday, March 6, 2015. Born Nov. 5, 1918 in Wells County, Ind., he was the only child of the late Homer and Grace Crowl. Being hard times during the Depression, Glenn learned the value of money early - by the time he graduated from the eighth grade he had already begun what was to become his life long career, a coin-operated amusement machine operator. He purchased his first mechanical table-top pinball machine when he was 14 years old, in 1932. With the help of his mother Grace, Playfair Sales became a large coin-operated amusement operation throughout the midwest. He married his Elmhurst High School sweetheart, Bettie Beaman in 1946. Nearly thirty years after the death of his wife, he married another long-time Waynedale resident, Catherine (Sheets) Warren. Together they traveled extensively, culminating with a flight on the Concorde to London, England. This happy union lasted 25 years until her death last November. Glenn is survived by his children, Diann Deutsch and Brian (Sandra) Crowl; step-children, James (Nancy) Warren and Peggy Engleman; nine grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and many dear ones who loved him like a father and grandfather because of his generosity, charity, and sincere concern. Service is 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 11, 2015 at Waynedale United Methodist Church, with calling one hour prior. Friends may also call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 10, 2015 at Klaehn, Fahl & Melton Winchester Road Chapel. Burial in Oaklawn Cemetery, Ossian, Ind. Memorials may be made to the Waynedale United Methodist Church, where he has been a member since 1927.

We lived next door to Glen from the time I was born until I was 12. My father worked for Glen as a vending machine operator and repairman for much of that time. He was the closet thing to a godfather I ever had! I use skills I learned from him every day. Among many things, chief on the list would be phone skills. Dad was "home office" (working from the house) 50 years before that became the norm! I was not allowed to answer our phone ( originally a party line (Sherood 747) ) until I could answer a phone correctly with clients the most common call. And I had to be able to take a message so Glen's customers were properly serviced. He wood have fit in well in Texas ( my adopted home) he was great of heart and spirit and a valued member of the Marler extended family! Our best to Daughter Diane and Brian and his family . Brian,

I share your sorrow with empathy and fondness. Losing a parent is a painful adjustment to a new normal that never again feels quite the same. I wish you and your family peace.

Thoughts and prayers to the family of this dear, sweet man I was so lucky to know. I talked to him many times and he was such a caring person with a heart full of love. May he rest in peace and have a grand time in Heaven with all his dear friends and family, including my beautiful grandma, Martha Stolte who passed away late last year.
