JAMES R. BATTERSHELL

JAMES R. BATTERSHELL, 81, of Hicksville, Ohio, died Friday, July 8, 2016, at Community Health Professional Inpatient Hospice, Defiance, Ohio. Born Aug. 31, 1934, in Celina, Ohio, he was the son of the late Robert and Helen (Otis) Battershell. Jim was a 1952 graduate of Antwerp High School, Antwerp, Ohio. He also attended Defiance College for two years. On July 10, 1954, Jim was united in marriage to Mary Rose Gerschutz; she survives. Jim worked as a chemist at Joslyn-Slater Steel, Fort Wayne, for 35 years. He coached the V.F.W. Little League team in Hicksville for nine years, volunteered at Crippled Children & Adults Society, was instrumental in the addition of Healthfit at Community Memorial Hospital and enjoyed fishing, gardening, cooking and antique collecting. But, Jim's biggest love was activities involving his wife and family. Jim is also survived by four sons, Jim Jr. (Leesa), Dave (Denise), John (Penny), and Tom (Zonya); daughter-in-law, Roseanne (Jeff) Volkert; grandchildren, Ryan (Kimberly) Battershell, Nick and Staci Battershell, Jarod, Chris, Marcia, Adam Rosebrock, Moriah and Abbey Battershell, Kelli (Chad) Reineke, Tyler and Logan Battershell, Mike and Adam Battershell; and great-grandsons, Owen and Rhett Reineke. He was preceded in death by a son, Bob and grandson, Eric Battershell. Service is 10 a.m. Tuesday at Smith & Brown Funeral Home, Hicksville. Visitation is from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
