George Frangos
DOVER - George D. Frangos, 78, died peacefully on Saturday March 9, 2013, at his home surrounded by his family, after a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born in Vlahopoulo, in the Peloponnese region of Greece, on January 17, 1935, the son of Demetrios and Athanasia (Kakridonis) Frangos. He survived difficult times growing up in Greece during World War II and the Civil War, with frequent famine and hardship, and he spent his early years working at the family farm. He came to Dover in 1956 to live with his brother, Costas, and his family, who helped him get established here.
George was a longtime entrepreneur in the greater Dover area having owned a number of different businesses including George's Hair Stylists (with several locations in the greater Dover area), the Wooden Spoon restaurant, laundromats, apartment buildings, and most recently Central Barber Shop in Dover.
He moved back to his native Greece in 1984 where he owned a glue business and returned to Dover in 1991.
His Greek heritage was very important to him and he passed that heritage on to his family. He also enjoyed spending time with his family, Greek cuisine, playing cards and backgammon with family and friends, and gardening.
He was a member of the Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation.
He is survived by his wife of more than 40 years Stacy (Andronis) Frangos, his children and their families Demetrios Frangos and wife Heather and their children Emme and Kate, all of Boston, Mass.; Athanasia Smith and husband Gregg and their children Olivia and Noah, all of Medfield, Mass.; and many nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased his brothers Costas and Theodore, and sisters Pauline Karabelas and Kaliroi Kefala, and by baby brother George and kid sisters Tasia and Voula.
Friends are invited to call Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Tasker Funeral Home, 621 Central Ave.
Private family funeral services will be held and burial will be in the Annunciation Cemetery.
He was an incredible husband, father and grandfather who bravely fought his cancer after he was diagnosed. The family would like to express their sincere thanks to the Seacoast Cancer Center and Dr. Sonneborn and his staff for their care.
In George's memory you are asked to give your family or loved one a hug in his honor and those who desire may make memorials in his name to either the Seacoast Cancer Center, 789 Central Ave., Dover, NH 03820 or the Annunciation Church, Cemetery Fund, 93 Locust St., Dover, NH 03820

Sorry to be so late in offering these condolences to George's family. His quiet demeanor and the way he interacted with kids in the shop always made me smile, reminded me of my own Dad in many ways. He always insisted that I take a couple lolipops home for my girls. I will truly miss this wonderful man.

George was such a great guy who has touched so many lives, he will be truly missed. I always looked forward to getting my hair cut and visiting with George which I have done for years. I will really miss the conversations we used to have and how when my wife used to come with me, he would always try to give her a tootsie pop. Our heartfelt condolences go out to all of George's family, and friends.

I was sadder than I have been in a long time when I read of George's passing. He cut my sons' and husband's hair for years and whenever I ran into him outside of the shop he would ask how the boys and my husband were. I always remember the twinkle in his eye when he finished a haircut and he would tell my sons that they were a handsome fella. I wish I has seen him one more time. We loved George.

My deepest sympathy to the Frangos family during this sorrowful time. I met George 47 years ago when I would accompany my Mother to her Saturday morning appointment at Georges' salon on Washington Street. George would send a stylists next door to get a fountain soda for me. George had a way of making people feel special. May the Love and memories of all who knew George be a source of comfort and peace to you.

To the Frangos Family,
After hugging my children while they cried at the news of George's death, I explained that along with knowing and enjoying a great man, we should continue his legacy by sharing his considerate manner and compassion for others as our tribute to him. There aren't enough people like him around anymore. He will be missed.

I will forever associate getting my haircut with pop-pop. The name Pop-Pop comes from the great Tootsie Roll Lollipops he would give me after a good haircut. He always told me to search for the Native American shooting the star on the wrapper.
Now, 15 years later, I plan my haircuts on my trips home from college so I can go to pop-pops. Thanks for all the great haircuts and Lollipops.

Sending our deepest condolences to Stacy and your family. When we first moved into the neighborhood, George was one of the first neighbors to greet us and make us feel welcome. He helped snow-blow our driveway that first winter and brought us Ouzo and seasame candies when you returned from Greece. We only knew him for a short time but he touched our lives. Our hearts go out to you during this difficult time.

Dear Stacy and family,
Our deepest sympathy to you and your family. George was a good man, and he loved his family.
In 1973, George gave me my first hairstylist job at George's Hair Stylist in Somersworth. He gave a 18 year old, with no experience a job! He was a wonderful man to work for.
Thank you Goerge, I will always be gratful.
Our sincere condolences to you, and your family.

I worked for George in the mid 60s at his very busy beauty salon on Washington St. He was a wonderful man to work for! He was very kind, funny and always very generous to all. I always enjoyed his stories of Greece and the Greek dances we went to. My Dad always went to George for his hair cuts. George always asked my parents for updates on me and my children. Please accept my deepest sympathy on his struggles and his passing. May he rest in Peace!

George, you will be missed by hundreds, if not thousands, of us whose lives you touched. Like so many, my son got his first haircut in your chair and many Tootsie Pops. To me, you embodied what it meant to come to this country not expecting it to owe you anything but a chance. You and your family, and all of us in the community, should be so proud of what you made of it. Rest in peace, and may God comfort your family.

George cut my 3 boys hair for many, many years once we moved to Dover. He would always ask them how they were doing in school and in their sports and interests and was so supportive to us when my husband passed away 9 years ago. My sons Jacob, Phillip and Stephen and I will always remember his kindness. Our condolences go out to the family. He was a wonderful man and will be greatly missed.

George, what can I say? Since the first time I came into the shop to the last time we talked, either we were talking about the weather, my job, my car, Nick's car, or the beloved parking meters, it was always a good time. And the way that you would take care of my son Christopher, from his very first haircut (of which the picture is still on your wall) to his last. Each time I would come in, you would ask about him. I really appreciated that. And that time we met at the grocery; my mother was with me, and after you and I spoke, as my mom and I were walking away she said “He is such a nice man, he reminds me of Grampa, so kind.” You were a steady, kind, and generous presence in all of our lives. You will surely be missed. God bless you.
