Albert V. Martin
YORK, Maine - Albert V. Martin, 75 of Thistle Road in York, Maine, died on Jan. 27, 2013, at York Hospital following a period of failing health.
Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on May 7, 1927, he was a son of John and Harriet Martin and attended schools in New York. He and his wife have made their home and raised a family in York for many years.
Al came to Maine as a beneficiary of the "Fresh Air Program" and was taken in by a Maine State Trooper Sherman Clark and his wife Ann, who became his foster parents. They instilled in him early in life the importance of community service, leading him after his service in the United States Navy
to begin a career in law enforcement. He served the town of Kittery as a patrolman, rose up through the ranks to sergeant, assistant chief and to chief of the department. He also served his community as a member of the Kittery Volunteer Fire Department, a Mason, and member of the Kittery Lions Club.
Al enjoyed time spent on Mousam Lake with friends, memorable hunting trips with the Melhorns and O'Sullivans and trips with his wife to the New England Casinos.
He is survived by his loving family, his wife Eleanor (D'Errico) Martin of York, son Timothy Martin Sr and his wife Barbara of Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, daughter Lynn Lane of New Jersey, grandchildren, Timothy Martin Jr., his wife Amanda, Christian and Shane Martin, Alexandria and Ashley Shapiro, Brittany, Jack, Kirsten and Brian Lane, foster sister Elaine and her husband Nelson Paine and their children Cameron and Brandon Paine and Anne Andrews.
Friends may visit with Al's family on Thursday from 6-8 p.m. in the JS Pelkey Funeral Home 125 Old Post Road Kittery, Maine 03904. A funeral will be celebrated on Friday at 11 a.m. in the First Congregational Church of Kittery Point, United Church of Christ, 23 Pepperrell Road, Kittery Point 03905, with the Rev. Dr. Jeffrey Gallagher officiating. Care for the Martin family has been entrusted to the JS Pelkey Funeral Home.
