Charles W. Johnson
NEWMARKET - Charles W. Johnson, 94, passed away on Tuesday, April 1, 2014 at Bellamy Fields in Dover.
Born in Malden, Mass. on December 18, 1919 he was the son of Charles A. and Mary Jane (Sonn) Johnson. He was a longtime resident of Portsmouth before moving to Newmarket in 1966.
Charlie was a graduate of Portsmouth High School Class of 1938 where he was co-captain of the football team. He went to Wentworth Institute and entered the apprentice program at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in 1940. He served in the U.S. Navy
from 1944 to 1946 and returned to the electrical shop on the yard and retired as an electrical planner and estimator. He was very proud of the fact that while serving on the battleship Wisconsin he was the only person on board who was able to repair the electric motor for the ice cream machine.
He was a longtime lobsterman and a sailing champion on Lovell Lake.
Husband of the late Anna (McGee) Johnson he is survived by his son Charles M. Johnson of Newmarket and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his sister Ruth Bloomquist and brothers Walter and Edward Johnson.
Services: Visiting hours will be held on Monday, June 9, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State Street, Portsmouth. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, June 10, at Saint Catherine Church, 845 Woodbury Avenue, Portsmouth at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
