Donald N. Hanson, Sr.

SANFORD - Donald N. Hanson, Sr., 82, of Sanford, passed away on Jan. 20, 2013, after a long illness.

He was born and raised in Kennebunk and was the youngest child of Orville P. Hanson and Ruth (Hood) Hanson.

He attended Kennebunk schools and served in the United States Navy aboard the USS Providence and USS Furse.

He married Irene D. Hayes, of Wells, on June 26, 1948, and raised two sons, Micheal and Donald, Jr. His family meant the world to him, and he was very proud to be a grandfather as well as a great grandfather.

He was a lifetime member and Past Post Commander of VFW Post 6548 in Kennebunk.

He was also an avid sports fan, with his favorite being baseball and the Boston Red Sox.

He was employed by Parsons Lumber Company, of York, and Maremont Corporation, of Saco, retiring in 1988 due to ill health.

In 1989, he moved to Virginia Beach, Va., residing there until April 1999, when he moved back to Maine due to declining health. While in Virginia, he also became a member of VFW Post 4809. He truly enjoyed his time in Virginia and spoke highly of everyone with whom he became friends.

He was predeceased by his wife of 38 years, Irene (Hayes) of Kennebunk; brothers, Orville, of Worcester, Mass., Elmer, of Kennebunk, and Harold, of Ogunquit; sisters, Lillian Vadnais, of Kennebunk, and Margie Butler, of Kennebunk, and Gladys Bodwell, of West Kennebunk.

He is survived by his two sons, Michael R. Hanson, of Gig Harbor, Wash., and Donald, Jr., and his wife, Brenda, of Sanford; 6 grandchildren, Michael and Sarah, of Wash., Jeremiah, of Fla., Evan, of North Waterboro, and Crystal and Donald III, of Sanford; as well as 5 great grandchildren along with several nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to thank the staff at The Lodges of Springvale, Hospice of Southern Maine and The Gosnell House in Scarborough for their support, kindness, compassion and great care.

Visiting hours will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 26, at the Bibber Memorial Chapel at 67 Summer Street in Kennebunk, where a funeral will be held at 11 a.m. at the chapel.

Interment will be held at Hope Cemetery, Kennebunk, with military honors in the spring.
