WELLS, Maine - Fred "Freddy" Ray Bragdon, 81, of Meetinghouse Rd, passed away peacefully on

Saturday Oct 12, 2013 at Varney Crossing Nursing Home, surrounded by loved ones after a long illness.

Fred was born on May 24, 1932 in Springvale, the son of Fred and Gertrude (Welch) Bragdon.

He grew up in Wells, attended and graduated from WHS in 1949. After graduating, he joined the Air Force and served his country in Korea from 1951 to 1955. Later, he worked for

Burton McAfee as a plumber, then on to the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as a pipefitter for 25 years and retired in 1992. Fred attended the Wells Branch Baptist Church and volunteered at the Wells Branch Fire Department.

He married the love of his life, Carolyn (Hasty) Bragdon on October 30, 1959 and shared nearly 54 married years together. They enjoyed a life in Wells with their three children that grew to include 6 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren of which he loved to spend time with. He also loved the outdoors, especially his yard. Fred could always be seen on a sunny summer day tending his beautiful lawn and vegetable garden. His garden always produced a wonderful bounty that Carolyn canned so they could enjoy it year round.

Fred especially loved to watch his children and grandchildren participate in their activities and

was a true fan of them. He loved sports and was a lifelong Boston Red Sox fan.

He and his buddies were avid softball players in their younger years. After retiring, he enjoyed reminiscing with some of them, along with other friends, over breakfast outings. Even as his health declined, they made sure to include him, which meant so much to him.

Freddy and Callie were fortunate to spend many happy retirement years together. They had wonderful vacations in Hawaii, Las Vegas and Nova Scotia. They loved getting "out and about" taking day trips to local beaches, restaurants, fairs, visiting family, and always their grandchildren's sporting and school events. All who had the good fortune to know Fred will remember his kind heart, spunky spirit and that twinkle in his eye!

Fred was predeceased by his parents, Fred and Gertrude Bragdon.

He was greatly loved and will be missed by his wife, Carolyn: his son Archie Stevens and wife Julie, his daughter Tamara McCormick and son Glen Bragdon; his grandchildren Aaron Stevens and wife Jennifer, Brandon Stevens, Brooke Stevens, Ryan McCormick, Meagan McCormick and Nick Bragdon; his great-grandchildren Tesfahun and Mulugeta Stevens; his sister Freda Pearson and brother Richard Bragdon; along with many other family and friends too numerous to include here.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 19, 2013, at Johnson's Funeral Home, 26 Market Street, North Berwick. Interment will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery, South Berwick.
