Henry Fredrick Graves Jr.
KITTERY, Maine - Henry Fredrick Graves Jr., age 80, of Kittery died Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2013, peacefully at York Hospital. He was born in Norwich, Conn., the only son of Henry Fredrick Graves and Antoinette Valentine. He married Patricia Ann Gladue of Taftville in 1957 and had two children Beth Lynn Graves and Steven Henry Graves.
After graduating from Norwich Free Academy and a short career as a butcher, Henry enlisted in the Navy in 1952 during the Korean War
and served onboard the aircraft carrier USS Wright. He transitioned into the submarine force he served aboard two submarines the USS Sarda (SS 488) Groton, Conn. and USS Albacore (AGES 569) Portsmouth. Henry spent a number years as a Naval Recruiter in the Mid-West. In recognition as being one of the Navy's top recruiter, he was recognized by the Secretary of the Navy and awarded a special Navy Achievement Medal. He retired as a the Submarine Base New London Career Counsel in New London, CT after 26 years of service. Henry worked another 15 years at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as manager of the Officer's Club and the Assistant Deputy Director of Morale, Welfare and Recreation.
Henry was known for his incredible work ethic. He often workeda second job nights and weekends, when not a sea. Later in life, he took great pleasure in his four grandchildren and was particularly proud to have two grandsons attending the United States Naval Academy. Henry played a very active role in the establishment of the Albacore museum in Portsmouth. He also took enormous pride and enjoyment organizing and attending the USS Albacore's many reunions.
Henry is survived by his daughter Beth Mulloy and her husband Joseph Mulloy of Fairfax, Va., his son Steven Graves and his wife Pamela Graves of Kittery Point, Maine; and four grandchildren; Tyler and Connor Mulloy (midshipmen USNA) and Colin and Briley Graves. His wife Patricia predeceased him in 2012 after 55 years of marriage. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Friends may visit with Henry's family on Friday December 20,2013 from 3-5 p.m. in the JS Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery, Maine 03904, where military honors will be confirred at 3 p.m. A memorial mass will be celebrated on Saturday December 21, 2013 at 11 a.m. at the Parish of the Ascension of The Lord in St. Raphel's Church at 6 Whipple Road Kittery, Maine 03904. Arrangements have been entrusted to the JS Pelkey Funeral Home in Kittery.
